Is Dark Mode Good for Your Eyes and Battery in 2025?

There’s been a ton of chatter about dark mode making your eyes happier and your battery last forever. So what’s the reality as we head into 2025?

Eyes: Dark mode cuts down glare and slashes some of the blue light so many of us worry about. For a lot of people that’s more comfortable - but it’s not magic. Some folks find white text on a black screen hard to read for long stretches, and if that’s you, stick with light mode without guilt.

Battery: The battery story depends on your screen. On phones with OLED or AMOLED displays, dark themes can save real power - think around 40% when your brightness is cranked up. On LCD/LED screens, the savings are tiny at best. And if you bump the brightness because the dark UI looks too dim, any advantage disappears.

Trends: Yes, dark mode is trendy - polls show most people prefer it. But “most people” doesn’t include your eyes or your phone. Play around with different themes and brightness levels and choose what feels best.

Bottom line: Dark mode is a nice tool for eye comfort and battery life on the right hardware, but it isn’t a requirement. Pick the mode that makes you happy - no need to pledge allegiance to the Dark Side.
